FAQ
Questions and answers
Short answers to what people ask before installing.
Cost and license
What does it cost?
Nothing. Workletto is free and open source, under the MIT license. Hosting is paid to the host you choose. On Render, the quickest install, it’s about $14.50 a month. If it saves you work, you can support the work with a donation.
Why is it free?
Because there’s no support desk and no promise of updates: you run your copy and keep it working. Building the app and its install took a lot of work, and hosting this website and the live demo costs money every month. If the setup saved you weeks of building something like it yourself, you can say thank you with a donation of any amount. A donation doesn’t buy support or features.
Why is hosting separate?
The app runs in your own hosting account, so the host you choose bills you directly. On Render, the quickest install, it’s about $14.50 a month. Pricing has the details.
How many people can use it?
As many as you like. Users, clients and projects are unlimited, and nothing in the code limits them. A very large team may need a bigger hosting plan.
What can I do with the code?
The MIT license lets you use it, change it and share it, including for your clients. Keep the license notice in your copy. The software is provided as is, without a warranty.
Will there be updates?
We publish fixes when we choose to, security fixes first, and new versions when we make them. Nothing is promised. Your copy keeps working either way: nothing expires and nothing switches off.
Aren’t there other free, open-source time trackers?
Yes. Workletto is for teams who want an install a non-developer can finish in about 5 minutes, and a product designed around client work: projects, budgets and billable hours. The MIT license also lets you change your copy privately, with no duty to publish your changes.
Hosting and setup
Do I need to be technical?
No. The Render path needs no terminal. You click through GitHub and Render, and the whole install takes about 5 minutes. The installation guide shows each step.
Which hosts are supported?
Render is the one we recommend: its Deploy button sets up the app and its database. If you have your own server, you can run Workletto there with Docker Compose. Any host that runs a Docker container with Postgres 17 works too, and the install guide has the steps.
Your data
Where is my data stored?
In the Postgres database on your own hosting account. We have no access to it, and the app doesn’t send it to us. Where your data is kept explains how, and how to check.
Can I back it up and export it?
Render’s paid databases offer point-in-time recovery; check what your plan includes. You can also export your clients, projects, tasks, time and expenses as spreadsheet (CSV) files from Import & export in the app, whenever you like.
Changing it
Can I put our own branding on it?
Yes. In settings you can set your logo, colors, app name and light or dark mode. You also have the full source code, so you can change anything else, including the name. Keep the license notice in your copy.
Can I change the code, or have a developer or AI tool do it?
Yes. You get the full source in your own private repository. Updates arrive as a proposed change, so your changes are kept. Where you and we changed the same lines, Git flags the spot so you can resolve it.
Can an agency install it for its clients?
Yes. The MIT license allows it. You or the agency look after each install.
Support and updates
Is there support?
No, there’s no support desk. The Help Center covers installing and using the app.
What if something breaks?
Ask an AI coding assistant such as Claude Code or Codex to fix your copy: Change Workletto with an AI coding assistant shows how. Keep backups, because a fix to the code can’t bring back lost data: Back up and restore.
Is there a demo?
Yes. The live demo gives you a private workspace with sample data, with no sign-up.
Try the demo, then install it free.
